Allen Citizens Police Academy – Week 1

September 6, 2013

I live in Allen, Texas.  For ya’ll not familiar with Allen, we are a northern suburb of Dallas. And yes, we are home to the infamous Eagle Stadium, but that is post for another day.

We have lived and been active in our home town for many years. I have always wanted to attend the Citizens Police Academy (CPA).  CPA is a 13 week program that meets one night a week.  The purpose of the academy is to educate the public on the workings of the Police Department.

We had our initial meeting last night.  Sgt. Felty did a great job welcoming us and getting the academy up and running.  It was a fun evening.  We had a great time getting to know our fellow class mates.  We also found out about the Volunteers in Policing and Citizens on Patrol volunteers for the city.

Over the next 12 weeks, we will get to spend time with the K-9 unit, Narcotics, Tactical, use the driving course, and many more areas associated with the police force.  Each week, I will give a short write up of what we covered.  Next week we will be covering an overview of the Police Department and What are Police Officers responsible for.

The City runs the Academy in the Spring and Fall of the year.  It is too late to sign up for this Academy, but another one starts in the Spring.  If interested, please go to City of Allen’s Citizen Police Academy.
